Technologies that are aging and those that remain
When you go back to sites where you had previously worked, do you ever wonder how you were able to accomplish such feats when your resources were so limited? It would be unthinkable to imagine a construction site without a tester and it seems that we can no longer envisage new constructions without adding energy performance, artificial intelligence or other technologies. There will surely be a time when we wonder how we could have lived without all these additions. In the meantime, you can familiarize yourself with new technology trends in this issue. Good reading!

Let's Keep This Between Us: 5 Unwritten Rules of Customer Confidentiality
By Jeff Mowatt
Did you ever have a potential customer who should have been excited about doing business with you but seemed reserved? It happened in a weird way for me. The senior managers seated around the boardroom table were excited about their new technology that would disrupt their market and separate them from every competitor. They had brought me in to help craft their sales message and train their reps. Along with their excitement, I sensed some tension. So after the VP of Marketing introduced me, my first remark was, "I know this goes without saying. I just want it known for the record that everything we discuss here will be treated by me as confidential." I immediately noticed a look of relief on the face of the CEO. From that point on, things went just fine.

5 Interesting Data Centre Trends
Rittal has outlined five trends for cloud computing and data centres that IT managers should have on their agenda. Trend 1: data centres will acquire greater AI-based monitoring capabilities. IT data centre specialists will require assistance systems featuring artificial intelligence (AI), or they will soon find it impossible to operate large and complex IT systems in a fail-safe way. By 2022, half the components within large data centres will include integrated AI functions and therefore be operating autonomously. This means administrators will be reliant on predictive analytics and machine learning to ensure maximum reliability of their data centres. Trend 2: processing the flood of data in real time with edge computing…

Q & A Brought to You by Britech
My boss has asked me to monitor our heat tracing cables to determine the amount of power they use for freeze prevention and process requirements. How can I do this?
I suspect this is an industrial application and you may have multiple systems operating under various applications. Heat tracing controllers that monitor power usage and control each circuit are available. These are sophisticated controls that monitor GFCI trip, high temperature, low temperature, RTD failure, loss of power, and loss of conductivity. They can be connected directly to the building's operations centre through an RS 485 port for monitoring and control. They also should have a current monitoring function for each circuit to determine power usage and possibly help to determine whether the proper cable has been installed on the pipe or tank. We have found many instances where cut in the field, constant wattage cables are a better application than self-regulating cables for long life, energy saving and reduced hydro demand charges.

Increased Efficiency and Reduced Costs with AEON LED Luminaires
Flood lights spread light over a wide area, but to do their job well they often must be mounted on high posts. This means companies need to find options that require minimal maintenance and infrequent replacement. LED flood light luminaires from AEON LED feature proprietary technology that keeps critical LED components cooler, which extends their lifespan significantly. AEON LED has several different models that deliver between 33,100 to 105,000 lumens with wattage options ranging between 230W to 750W, equivalent to 1,000W to 4,000W HID lighting sources.

Arteche's New Submersible Voltage Transformers Prevent Flood-related Damage
Arteche's new range of submersible voltage transformers are suited for underground MV distribution in flood-prone areas for 19 feet (about 6 meters) intermittent submersible application. The UENS (single phase) and VENS (two phases) are submersible voltage transformers designed to be installed in underground vaults, pad mounted equipment and other MV equipment, avoiding both service interruption and flood-related damage. These transformers are maintenance free and, due to their dielectric properties and mechanical strength, have a long mechanical and electrical life.
