Managing Editor, Line Goyette Spring is the time for mega lighting shows

This Light + Building event last month in Frankfurt hosted 216,000 visitors from 160 different countries. In two weeks many of us will converge on San Diego for LightFair International. The growing popularity of these events in a time of geopolitical and economic uncertainty illustrates how strong a force lighting has become in our interior and exterior environments, and how important a factor in responding to societal issues. Looking forward to crossing paths with you in San Diego, and sharing on these pages what's new in the industry. Follow us live on Twitter @ldsnewsletter. Good reading!

The Coming LiFi Opportunity?

By David Gordon
LiFi Opportunity As we've seen over the past couple of months with the entry of Cisco into the lighting space and emergence of PoE, the lighting space is changing. By virtue of the technology is there a significant risk that a percentage of lighting spend could move to other channels? If so, which channels? The market size may grow but it may become more fragmented. Those that are familiar with technology, that Cisco has "easy" access to, and/or channels that are amenable to PoE companies and new approaches could become the electrical / lighting distributors' new competitors (and manufacturers' new "partners"). Or perhaps it will become building automation manufacturers / distributors who install and manage the business and hence could install and manage networks and "lighting networks." Another upcoming technology that takes advantage of lighting as an infrastructure but could be a major technology infrastructure is LiFi, a wireless optical networking technology that uses LEDs for data transmission... Global Market Access for Lighting Products

By Andrew Saunders
Lighting Exports The ever increasing demand in lighting products has fuelled lighting manufacturers in North America to export their products around the globe. Navigating the global regulatory landscape with respect to standards, certification and marking requirements is a complex and challenging task. Manufacturers need to be aware of the global requirements at the national level, but also at the regional and local levels. Large international certification organizations are best equipped to help manufacturers sort through the complexities and the rapidly changing environments of certifying lighting products for multiple global markets. This article focuses on explaining the key factors... Read More

Relamping Standard's Warehouse

Standard Project In August 2015, Standard relamped its warehouse in Ville Saint-Laurent, PQ, improving workplace safety and energy costs. The warehouse, which has 35-ft ceilings and 16 alleys, operates 11 hours a day, five days a week. To better light the aisles, Standard replaced HID metal halide lamps with LED high bay luminaires. These and other changes represent a savings of 170,000 kilowatt-hours or $16,000 per year in energy costs... Read More

Adaptive Lighting Systems Part 2: Daylight Harvesting

Daylight Harvesting Continuing our review of advanced lighting control strategies enabling smart and adaptive lighting systems, this time we'll look at what is known as daylight harvesting. While not as widely used as occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting is one of the most powerful techniques for cutting lighting energy usage. Because of its strong energy savings potential, it is required by an increasing number of energy codes and standards — so we can expect to see daylighting systems being deployed more and more often these days as building owners implement measures aimed at meeting current demands for environmental sustainability... Lifetime Breakthrough Promises Low-Cost, Efficient OLEDs

Efficent Oleds With just a tiny tweak, researchers at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, greatly increased the device lifetime of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that use a recently developed class of molecules to convert electricity into light, with the potential for increased efficiency at a lower cost in future displays and lighting. The easily implemented modifications can also potentially increase the lifetime of OLEDs currently used in smartphone displays and large-screen televisions... Read More
