Lighting rethought and rewarded
Lighting is generating increasing interest as both an experience and a philosophy. It is no longer just an accessory, but a way of seeing the world and the communities in which we live and work. It is impossible to talk about a project, product or solution without mentioning its features and benefits — economic, aesthetic, celebratory, inviting, and more. A recent project completed by the firm Ombrages is no exception. It won over the judges of the prestigious 2016 Darc Awards. You'll also find in this issue information that can help you better understand new lighting trends and future applications. Good reading!

PoE and DLVP: Comparing Power Distribution Systems for Lighting and Controls
By Chris Andrews
The invention of the LED has left an indelible mark on not only lighting, but also building power systems. Aggressive market adoption of LED lighting and falling prices have enabled greater use of control systems in every lighting market segment. In turn, the integration of control systems with LED lighting has created an upsurge of low voltage devices in the ceiling. Today, many fundamental devices require low voltage direct current (DC) power, yet the building electric power infrastructure is still alternating current (AC) line voltage, spurring a widespread effort to identify alternatives. Eaton Lighting Division's Chris Andrews shares two low voltage alternatives to AC line voltage power with overlay control systems. Each has the potential to revolutionize lighting and controls.

Using Encircled Flux Compliant Light Sources For Testing Fibre Optic
International standards development organizations including ISO/IEC and ANSI/TIA are updating several key standards documents that affect field-testing of fibre optic cabling. In particular the standards now describe the use of encircled flux compliant light sources. Encircled flux refers to the distribution of light exiting the launch fibre of a light source used for testing. The purpose of the standards is to ensure that different test systems from any manufacturer report the same loss for a given cable under test.

Highly Efficient White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Ultrathin Emissive Layers and a Spacer-Free Structure
By Shengfan Wu, Sihua Li, Qi Sun, Chenchao Huang & Man-Keung Fung
Since C.W Tang demonstrated the first OLEDs based on a double-layer structure of organic materials in 1987, lighting applications have grown dramatically because of their attractive features, such as simple fabrication process, ultra-thin structure, light weight and flexibility. In particular, white-emitting OLEDs are known to be an ideal light source without "blue" hazard. One of the major challenges for OLED commercialization is its cost. One way to reduce the manufacturing cost is to…
