The integration of lighting technology continues
Cisco System's new Canadian headquarters in downtown Toronto integrates lighting systems technologies and becomes the first commercial facility in North America to use PoE fixtures on a large scale. Also in this issue, we learn that robotic systems can create optimal lighting in operating rooms. Amy Huntingdon, CEO of Philips Lighting Americas, talks to us in this issue about this convergence of technologies and the immense possibilities that will follow. The speed with which we're integrating these technologies raises the topic of accurate, repeatable measurements. Some aspects of this topic appear in this issue. Good reading!

Setting New Standards for a Transforming Industry
By Amy Huntington
Never has there been a more exciting time to be part of the lighting industry. Although we have witnessed many technological shifts, none has been quite as disruptive as the industry's emerging digital transformation. The introduction of LEDs provided an efficient way to save energy, but the real value is realized when connected technology is added to LED infrastructure. A new class of standards is vital to this evolution. Now we must collaborate, embrace and support standards that address the future of the lighting industry.

How PoE Lighting Technology Will Affect Distributors
By David Gordon
The lighting market is changing and electrical distributors are at risk of losing aspects of the lighting segment. While it's doubtful that they'll lose the majority in the "near" future (5, 10, 15, 20 years), it is being whittled away by a number of factors. The point is that the lighting space is not the sole domain of electrical or lighting distributors. The emergence of LED and the fact that it is an electronic device changes the game. With lighting fixtures representing 20-33% of distributor sales (changes by distributor and their focus) and lamp sales declining, distributors should consider this as a critical business segment that requires attention.

Cisco Systems Canada Wins 2016 IES Lighting Control Innovation Award
The Canadian headquarters of IT giant Cisco Systems, an award-winning project, encompasses a 4-storey fit-out over 80,000 sq.ft. in Toronto, ON. Located within a new sustainability-leading downtown high-rise, the fit-up is targeting LEED Gold certification. Given the client's "Internet of Things" mandate, base building fluorescent luminaires were replaced with LED Power over Ethernet (PoE) luminaires, boasting the first large-scale commercial installation of PoE-enabled luminaires in North America.

Optical Measurement Guidelines for High-Power LEDs and Solid State Lighting Products, Part 1
The rapid growth of the LED industry brings up a need for reliable measurements of LEDs and solid state lighting products, which often form the foundation for comparisons among SSL products from different vendors. Consequently, there is an industry-wide push for standards that ensure accurate and repeatable measurements of products' optical properties. This white paper introduces appropriate calibration procedures and operating guidelines for integrating spheres used to characterize LEDs and SSL products.

Lighting Industry's New Normal Seems To Be In Effect, NLB Says
Lighting-equipment demand fell 4.7% between the second and third quarters of 2016, according to data developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) for its Lighting-Systems Index (LSI), a seasonality- and inflation-adjusted composite measure of luminaires, ballasts, miniature lamps, large lamps, and emergency lighting shipped by NEMA members. NEMA used 2002 data to create the LSI's 100-point benchmark.
