Standards for better and for worse
We can ignore neither the thrill that comes with working in a constantly evolving field where we are privileged to witness spectacular achievements in illuminating architectural treasures, nor the dismay that comes with poor design and execution, one result of which is light pollution. What unites the best and the worst, however, is the use of standards and the search for best practices. This issue is a case in point. Good reading.

Comments on the AMA Report Concerning LED Streetlighting and 3000K CCT
By Shirley Coyle
What is important to note about the ongoing conversation is that not all LED lighting is created equally, and the technology has reached a point where it's possible to deliver better experiences with lighting by providing low-glare, warm, dark-sky friendly illumination. On the issue of safety, the most obvious flaw of the concerns raised is that CCT is not the issue at all.

Learn How Li-Fi Works from Its Inventor, Harald Haas
By Kathy Pretz
Some day the last leg of our communication networks might depend on an LED bulb that transmits modulated signals and a separate photodetector — a photodiode — connected to a computer or other Internet-enabled device that displays the decoded signals. "Li-Fi will not only offer higher speeds than Wi-Fi," says IEEE Senior Member Harald Haas, "but it will do so with greater security and the potential to deliver unprecedented bandwidth and data density." Harald Hass has been dubbed the father of Li-Fi.

Revision to Chromaticity Standard Extends Range
By Michael Erbesfeld
ANSI C78.377-2015 American National Standard for Electric Lamps — Specifications for the Chromaticity of Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Products provides the range of chromaticity (colour) for general SSL products. It applies to LED products (SSL that uses light-emitting diodes) for general indoor lighting applications. The ANSI C78 committee is working on a revision that will extend the chromaticity recommendations for general SSL products to specify regions below the blackbody (Planckian) locus. This extended range will enable energy-efficient LED products, designed to replace traditional light sources, to be considered for future Energy Star certification.

Optical Measurement Guidelines for High-Power LEDs and Solid State Lighting Products, Part 2
Part 1, published in the March 9 issue of LDS, introduced calibration procedures and practical operating guidelines for integrating spheres that are used for the characterization of LEDs and SSL products. In this second of two parts: guidelines to prevent common equipment errors. Users sometimes report measurement discrepancies for the same LED when measured on two different systems. This section describes several common sources of equipment errors and provides suggestions to minimize those.
