Managing Editor, Line Goyette Choosing the right system for optimal results — sometimes a challenge

Rapidly developing technologies often come with new terms for describing them. Often these terms become buzzwords, and are sometimes used without any real connection to their original function. Saying a product is energy efficient doesn't clarify what the specifications actually are. For example, lighting control technology is rich in words to describe it, but they are often confused with other technologies from which the current innovation has emerged. Here in this issue, a guide to understanding lighting control technology and choosing the right system to generate the desired results. Also, another inspired project from Moment Factory, and a guide to retrofits and their impact on energy savings. Good reading!

An Awe-Inspiring Lighting Experience in a Celebrated Historical Cathedral

An Awe-Inspiring Lighting Experience in a Celebrated Historical Cathedral Aura is among Moment Factory's most ambitious and creative illumination projects to date. This 45-minute immersive sound, light and video projection-mapping experience is staged in Montreal's landmark Notre-Dame Basilica, one of Montreal's most iconic tourist attractions. Approximately one million people visit this monumental heritage landmark every year. The Gothic Revival cathedral is defined by soaring lines and towering spires designed to lift visitors' hearts and voices into communion with the divine. Almost 200 years later, these aspirations continue to infuse the Moment Factory team's approach. Read More

Lighting Controls

Lighting Control Networking 101 Networked lighting control systems are all the rage these days. Rightfully so, given their enormous capability to control luminaires, energy use — and potentially much more. But what are the major elements that define a networked lighting control system? Understanding this will help the specifier to decide which system to use on a project. Read More

Exploring Unplanned Costs of LED Lighting Retrofits

By Kevin Morin
Unplanned Costs of LED Lighting Retrofits There has been a lot of discussion around the office lately about the relationship between energy management and power management. While sometimes used interchangeably, the distinction made between these two disciplines typically involves analysis of power distribution systems for energy cost saving (energy management) or for improvement of electrical reliability or availability (power management). Of interest to my colleagues are situations where these disciplines overlap or impact the other. For example: the implementation of energy conservation measures that are expected to improve efficiency and lower energy costs but end up causing unplanned problems that negatively affect electrical network reliability. Research Supports Customized Lighting Solutions to Reduce the Negative Impact of Light on Sleep

Customized Lighting Solutions to Reduce the Negative Impact of Light on Sleep A study conducted at a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School shows that selectively reducing the amount of short-wavelength (blue) light emitted by a light reduced the alerting effects of typical indoor bedroom intensities before bed. The study was conducted with lighting technology provided by Lighting Science. "Lighting solutions being used as tools to positively impact health — on both an individual and global scale — are the future. This much is clear," says Fred Maxik, Chief Technology Officer and founder of Lighting Science. Read More
