Smart city challenges — on the ground and in design
Montreal's Isabelle Lessard talks about interoperability as not only a focal point of her smart city project, but also a breakthrough in the lighting systems market. See in detail this project, one of the most important in North America. A challenge in converting to smart cities and lighting controls is education: inform citizens and all concerned that lighting is more conceivable and planned differently with LED technology, and must be kept accountable when studying the effects of LED light on health in particular. Among these differences: the disparity in maintaining lumen levels, the difference between test results of the maintenance of lumen levels from LED light sources and those originating from traditional sources of lighting. More about maintaining luminous flux in this issue. Good reading!

Isabelle Lessard, Engineer Responsible for Urban lighting in Montreal — a Passion that Looks Beyond Prejudices
By Line Goyette
The title is a bit long, but it provides an immediate idea of the person behind the installation and management of intelligent lighting in Montreal, a project that has received awards and nominations since its commissioning and collected a following. Montreal is converting over 134,000 streetlights to LEDs and also implementing an intelligent lighting management system. Behind this revolution, a young engineer, Isabelle Lessard. Read on to learn more about her journey, the challenges she has identified, and how she sees the future of urban lighting.

Case Study
Montreal Undertakes One of North America's Largest Smart Lighting Projects
Montreal plans to initially convert more than 132,000 fixtures from HPS to LEDS distributed through 19 boroughs. Among this number, 85,000 streetlights are cobra heads and the remaining 47,000 are decorative lights. In 2016, 70% of these fixtures reached their end-of-life expectancy and needed to be replaced. Consequently, the city took the decision to convert the HPS fixtures that it had been using for several years to LED fixtures, which require less energy and have higher life expectancy.

The Lumen Maintenance Gap
Test results of lumen maintenance in conventional and LED light sources differ considerably. This is known as the lumen maintenance gap. These tests are performed to determine the useful life of a light source. But how do we compare lighting technologies satisfactorily if test results of a same designation do not mean the same thing?
