Lighting and the emergence of new markets and practices
The news always looks good on the lighting side. The technological possibilities seem endless and the market is doing well. It is also a developing market and new opportunities and new sectors continue to emerge. With the rise of cyber threats, the most important role for a network specialist is protecting networks from attacks, and as lighting controls become a strategic requirement for companies, lighting specialists are increasingly being called on to set up the networking. More in this issue. Also, with this issue we present a brand new format fully compatible with all the functions of all mobile platforms. Good reading!

Talking to IT Departments About Connected Lighting
By Steve Mesh
Networked lighting control systems (NLCs) are really computer networks — they just happen to control luminaires, occupancy sensors, photosensors and light switches. The paradigm shift for lighting control systems has occurred at lightning-fast speed in recent years. It is absolutely possible for you to specify, install and operate a networked lighting control system that is completely standalone, meaning that nothing whatsoever interacts with the NLC system in your (or your client's) building. However, many systems are now being installed using an existing IT network to connect components of the NLC. Once you decide to piggyback onto an existing IT network, you are in the domain of the IT staff who work for the building's owner.

Business Outlook
Q3 Lighting Market Continues Growth
By David Gordon
The lighting market continued its strong growth during the summer. Feedback from over 200 electrical distributors, manufacturers and manufacturer reps / lighting agents showed correlated input that the market grew by slightly more than 5%. Unit sales were approximately 1% higher. Key market segments for growth continue to be the small to mid-sized renovation markets and the industrial lighting markets. The new construction market was reported as slow. Price erosion was nominal, even in light of announced price increases as most if not all of the increases focused on non-LED products. Tariffs had no or limited impact in Q3, with most announcing price increases that will take effect in Q4 and perhaps have some impact in Q4 but more likely in Q1 2019.

Slashed OLED Production Costs Herald New Era for Lighting
A new generation of lighting products could soon be illuminating our homes and businesses after a high-profile group of researchers demonstrated that the cost of producing flexible OLED panels can be reduced by over 90%. The three-year European Flexolighting project revealed that by introducing novel manufacturing techniques and rethinking the complete supply chain, it's possible to reduce the cost of producing thin, high-efficiency OLED lighting panels to a similar level to that of traditional LEDs.

Luminaire Series Inspired by Da Vinci
If the Renaissance man were alive today, how would he use his body of work to design a lighting collection? This is the inspiration for Maurice Dery's latest handcrafted luminaire series, designed and manufactured by the father-son design team of Maurice and Jordan Dery at Karice Enterprises in Surrey, BC. In the fashion of Leonardo da Vinci, the theme revolves around machine gears, along with magnifiers that intensify the light sources and mirrors that redirect the light to the wall or floor. Using the latest in lighting, machining, and metalwork technology, the Karice's Da Vinci collection brings the Italian Renaissance back to life, in avant-garde form.
