Staying Safe Keeps the Good Times Rolling

With the NMMA lobbying on your behalf and successfully having the Trent/Severn/Rideau hours extended this summer, things are looking up for boaters in Canada. We are smack in the middle of summer's best offerings and there is lots to pay attention to in the boating world. Build a Boat with Monterey if you are shopping, learn about potential CO hazards on houseboats, upgrade your onboard audio system and don't forget to check out CY's new blog....always open and this week featuring marine weather app options.

Out on the open water you can feel invincible and free. This past week I observed a lot of water toys. One quick safety note is that when you are towing more than one tube or floating device it is smart to have your riders wear helmets to avoid concussion as they crash into each other. It's something you don't think about until it happens but staying safe will keep the good times rolling!

Consider the recent events near Texada Island, BC where a couple was out on their 16 foot open boat for a day of recreational fishing when they were overcome by some bad weather and rough seas and ended up capsizing into the cold April waters of the Pacific Ocean. ... Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki Sauce

This recipe is great for a make-ahead easy yet satisfying on board meal. You can use chicken or pork or both if you like. The tzatziki recipe is also a simple one but if time and ingredients are an issue you can buy a good prepared sauce to accompany your souvlaki. The directions suggest marinating for 30 minutes but of course if you leave it overnight the flavours will marry to perfection. Enjoy! ... Read More
