And So It Begins…

I hate this weekend.

It sucks! Every year, the weekend after Thanksgiving is haulout and therefore, for me, the official beginning of winter. Sunday morning I will arise greeted by darkness and by the end of a long day, we will be on the hard and Boat Season 2016 is irrevocably closed.

But first, let's rejoice and give further thanks for the summer we had. The weather was brilliant, the water levels were strong despite the lack of rain in the east and amazingly there was good wind almost every Wednesday evening.

In some ways, the haulout process is fun especially if you do it yourself as we do. You get the camaraderie of taking down the spar with friends and all the good-natured tomfoolery that accompanies that. I actually enjoy changing my engine oil - it gives me a feeling of self reliance I can no longer derive from my car.

If you're at a marina or club where the service is DIFM, it can be lovely too. The leaves change, there's nice cordial feel to it all. If you're in BC, well bully for you. No haulout required unless you feel like it. I'm jealous.

That's the glass half full. The other side of it is that no boats again until maybe April. That's the price we pay for living in the frozen North. Oh well, better than facing the Trump vs. Clinton circus of horrors.

By our next CY Onboard I'll be out of the water. Maybe we can work on things to do for the next five months. Meanwhile, adios Summer '16. We'll miss you.
