Get Smart

A couple of things got me off my butt this week.. I started (finally) to get more than passingly familiar with iNavX and CYOB received the CPS's notice of training courses starting up for the fall.

While it's a mixed blessing to contemplate off-season activities, boating really requires an increased level of learning these days. I took Seamanship just under 100 years ago and it never hurts to brush up. If you never have taken any training, the CPS courses are a real imperative.

In terms of apps and tabs and charts, the future is certainly unfolding in an exciting way. Owen Hurst has run through the several low-cost electronic systems available in previous columns - you can catch up here if you missed them. Many boaters tell me they still love their chart plotters, but using an iPad is a great way to set up waypoints, plan a route, and stay on top of updates even when you're not on board.

I look forward to spending the winter usefully, becoming more intuitive with tablet/phone applications. (Well, not really - I'd rather be out on the water!)
