Latest census figures — we know ourselves a little better now
In the most recent Canadian census data published last week, we learned that the country's population now exceeds 35 million, and Canadian population growth continues to be the strongest among G7 member countries. This growth comes in large part through immigration. The experts also said that the country attracts newcomers because of our centres of excellence. Ubisoft is the product of one of these centres, as you'll read in this issue. Also, our expert on the CE Code continues his journey through Part 1. Good reading!

Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I — Instalment 21
By William Burr
In this article: Section 38 — Elevators, dumbwaiters, material lifts, escalators, moving walks, lifts for persons with physical disabilities, and similar equipment. The numbering of rules in this section is an exception to the numbering system outlined in the code's preface because most of these rules will be used by elevator constructors. The numbering here corresponds with the numbers of associated rules in ASME A17.1/CSA B44, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and CSA-B355, Lifts for Persons With Physical Disabilities.

Lind Equipment Concludes Massive LED Jobsite Project with Ledcor
Lind Equipment's LED Jobsite system of temporary LED lighting was a featured part of a BC construction site for a massive, $600 million, 1.2 million square foot shopping mall. The Tsawwassen Mills project saw Ledcor build a $1.2 million square feet premium outlet shopping mall with 180 outlets just outside of Vancouver, BC. The mall was built by Ivanhoe Cambridge. From the first usage of LED Jobsite lights in November 2014 through to the opening of Tsawwassen Mills in October 2016, the LED Jobsite system saved over $110,000 in energy costs, over 1,000,000 kWh of electricity, and over 700 metric tons of CO2 compared to traditional bulb-based temporary lighting.

Lighting Work and Play at Ubisoft Quebec City
Ubisoft's 400 video game creators located in Quebec City have been settling in to their new workspaces since last May. An ambitious relocation project, the design of this new studio was done in an integrated way under the direction of the firm Coarchitecture, mandated by Ubisoft Quebec for this architectural challenge. The lighting of these new spaces, designed to encourage creative projects, was at the heart of the conception, and LumiGroup's expertise was called upon to achieve all the of the project's objectives, including the importance of creating an efficient, dynamic, and inspiring living environment, representative of Ubisoft's DNA.

Building Permits Decline 6.6% in December
Municipalities issued $7.2 billion worth of building permits in December, down 6.6% from November. Lower construction intentions were recorded for all components, led by commercial buildings and multi-family dwellings. In the residential sector, eight provinces posted declines while Ontario reported a record high. In the non-residential sector, the value of building permits fell 11.5% to $2.3, led by lower construction intentions for commercial buildings. Seven provinces reported decreases, with Ontario, Alberta and Quebec posting the largest declines. On an annual basis, 2016 was the fifth consecutive year that construction intentions have exceeded $80 billion. The total value of building permits for 2016, $84.5 billion, is down 0.8% from the previous year.

- Effect of Next Generation 100 W Power over Ethernet on RJ45 Connectivity
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is currently writing the 802.3bt standard, which will double the amount of power delivered to end devices. The current 25.5 W will increase to approximately 71 W, an increase of a factor of approximately 3 that allows devices such as next generation wireless access points, security cameras with pan, tilt, zoom, and heating elements, and larger displays to operate under the new PoE standard. This paper explains the effect the new 802.3bt standard running the highest Type 4 power will have on connectivity, specifically the Panduit TG style jacks.
