LEDs Optimized for Architectural and Emergency Vehicle Lighting Applications

LED Tech As a mainstay in architectural and emergency vehicle lighting, colour LEDs bring about intrinsic advantages such as durability and reliability, in addition to the possibility of delivering controlled "colour light performances." In recent years, however, the evolving architectural and emergency vehicle lighting landscape has necessitated developing colour LEDs that can enable the most effective and optimized system design. Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I — Instalment 25

By William (Bill) Burr
Bill Burr In this article: Section 46 — Emergency Power Supply, Unit Equipment, Exit Signs, and Life Safety Systems. Rule 46-000 Scope states that Section 46 is a supplementary or amendatory section of the code and applies to the installation, operation and maintenance of emergency power supply and unit equipment intended to provide power to life safety systems, exit signs, and illumination of exit signs in the event of failure of the normal power supply in cooperation with the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada. Appendix B and the CSA CEC Handbook provide additional explanations and diagrams. Read More

Power Shifts: Emerging Low-Voltage Trends, Impacts and Opportunities for the Canadian Electrical Channel

Research EFC The shift from electrical to digital systems, and the emerging low-voltage power options to supply them, may be the biggest change the electrical industry has seen in the last 100 years. This transition is having significant impact on every aspect of the traditional electrical channel, from product conception, production, sales, delivery and installation. Equipping the channel to embrace emerging technologies, specifically those related to low-voltage direct current (LVDC) power developments, and opportunities derived from LVDC systems, is the purpose of this research study by Electro-Federation Canada. March New Housing Investment Up 9% YOY

Economy Investment in residential construction totalled $28.2 billion in the first quarter, up 7.6% from the same quarter of 2016. Higher investment in single-family dwellings (+13.7% to $6.5 billion) accounted for nearly 40% of the change at the national level. Renovation work (+5.5% to $12.1 billion) and acquisition costs related to new dwellings (+13.4% to $3.4 billion) also largely contributed to the gain. Read More

New Products and Solutions

Vode Lighting, LLC (Zip Three 707 Wall Mount): Most Innovative Product of the Year - Commercial Indoor

The ZipThree LED fixture is a wall mounted, micro-thin blade design providing seamless bi-directional ceiling wash and wall graze lighting for corporate, hospitality and educational applications. At only 0.27" (7mm) tall and 4" (102mm) deep, the fixture disappears into the environment yet provides seamless, pure and balanced light. Optional edge glow softly illuminates the leading edge of the fixture, transforming the ZipThree into an elegant line of light. Drivers may be remotely located up to 72' (21.95m). Ceiling wash and wall graze may be independently controlled. Read More
Element Reflections

Tech Lighting (Element Reflections): Design Excellence Award - Recessed Downlights

Element Reflections domes (available in 5", 8" and 12" diameters) are recessed into the ceiling plane and act as reflectors to a completely hidden ring of up-firing LEDs that deliver perfectly controlled indirect illumination. The Element Reflections come in five distinctive domes, moulded with embossed design details, and subtly accent architectural themes with glare-free LED general illumination. Additionally, Element Reflections is dimmable for enhanced mood setting options. Ideal for residential, hospitality or senior living environments, Element Reflections lets recessed downlights infuse an interior design with style and taste while delivering pristine LED indirect illumination. Laser Light

Soraa Laser Diode's LaserLight SMD: Category Winner - Technical Innovation Award, LED/OLED, Chips and Modules

SLD's LaserLight SMD uses proprietary and patented semi-polar GaN laser diodes, combined with advanced phosphor technology, and packaged into a 7mm X 7mm surface mounted device (SMD). The LaserLight SMD combines the benefits of solid-state illumination, such as minimal power consumption and long lifetime, with the highly directional output that has been possible only with legacy technology. With the laser diode emission focused to a small spot on the phosphor where it is converted to white light, the LaserLight SMD delivers higher luminance than LEDs and enables safe, highly collimated white light output. The LaserLight SMD provides superior optical control with miniature optics and reflectors, along with high efficiency fibre optic transport and waveguide delivery. Read More

AMS (AS7221 Tuning Smart Lighting Manager): Judges' Citation Award - Non-Luminous Components, Specialty Hardware, Shades and Solar

AS7221 is a networking-enabled IoT smart lighting manager with embedded tri-stimulus colour sensing for direct CIE colour point mapping and control. IoT luminaire control is through a network connection, or by direct connection to 0-10V dimmers, with control outputs that include direct PWM to LED drivers and analog 0-10V to dimming ballasts. A simple text-based smart lighting command set and serial UART interface enables easy integration to standard network clients. Read More
Elum Tools

Lighting Analysts Inc. (ElumTools Version 2017): Category Winner - Research, Publications, Non-Control Software and Measuring Devices

ElumTools, the first fully integrated lighting calculation add-in for Autodesk Revit. ElumTools is designed to calculate point-by-point illuminance on any work plane or surface using lighting fixture families and surface geometry already present in the Revit model. ElumTools runs completely inside of Revit with its own ribbon toolbar to provide quick access to analysis tools for any Revit Room or Space. An interactive Radiosity-based visualization is a by-product of the calculation process to aid designers in understanding the interaction of light and surface. Read More
