When we have to make difficult decisions

In the interviews we do with industry people across the country, human resources management, and more specifically letting people go, comes up repeatedly as the most difficult aspect of managing a team or company. The economic situation is good across the country — despite a recent drop in building permits — but other reasons besides a lack of work may justify replacements or layoffs. To help you prepare for this eventuality, our contributor Michelle Branigan identifies six important steps to remember when initiating this process. It's something that touches people on both sides of this decision. Also in this issue, the revival of a heritage church, one of Quebec's oldest, thanks to the work of lighting experts. Good reading!

Rittal - Hygienic design enclosures reduce cleaning & downtime!
Rittal Downtimes during production represent the "worst case scenario" for plant operators. They reduce productivity and, consequently, impact sales. However, in hygienic-critical production situations, longer downtimes are unavoidable because of the amount of cleaning required. However, industrial wall-mounted enclosures and standard enclosures for machines and plants often fail to support a need for fast but effective cleaning. Their basic design as well as their various "nooks and crannies" make cleaning more difficult meaning they can be dirt traps and thus a breeding ground for germs. Read More

By Michelle Branigan
Michelle Branigan While hiring staff can be an arduous undertaking for even the most experienced manager, ultimately you end up giving the successful candidate good news. However, the reality of managing staff is that at some stage you may need to let people go. The reasons why will vary. Restructuring. Financial difficulties.
