What are the factors to consider before investing in major modernization projects?

Some studies suggest that 20 billion objects and devices will be connected via the Internet in 2020. That's almost tomorrow. Decisions made at the start of large-scale projects are all the more important as they will feed future decisions. Lighting controls also affect the delicate question of data control. In this issue, read about security concerns raised by the Industrial Internet of Things. While several measures are being taken to prevent security breaches at the device level and beyond, there is still work to be done to educate consumers and ensure the safety of integrated devices. Better safe than sorry. Good reading!

Are You Offering the Right Employee Benefits?

By Michelle Branigan
Michelle Branigan Recently I sat down to look at the benefits package for my own team. Interestingly, things that I appreciated the most were not necessarily valued by some of the team. In today's organizations, where most of us have Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials (and younger) among the mix, it can be challenging to ensure that your employees are deriving real value from what is considered by most as a key part of their compensation package. Here are a few useful tips. Read More

Alert: Electrical Lockout Using Manual Motor Controllers

Safety Workers in industrial workplaces such as office buildings, factories, arenas, shops or offices who are required to work on manual motor controllers (MMCs) or other electrical equipment may be at risk of serious injury or death if the electrical equipment is not stopped, de-energized and locked out and tagged before work starts. Manual motor controllers are typically used to control motor driven equipment such as commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning units. They also serve as a motor starter/controller, and sometimes as a motor disconnect. Typically, MMCs should be marked with the words "suitable as a motor disconnect." Read More

Q & A Brought to You by Britech

We had many people ask how to check that the approvals for electrical equipment certified for Canada are accurate

Britech Heating cables, radiant panels and heating cable sets should be certified according to CSA Standard CSA-130.22.2 or later. We get many inquiries about offshore products that bear an approval that are not for use in Canada or have been approved under the wrong standard. Should there be a fire or injury, I doubt if your electrical safety regulator or your insurance company will accept that "You thought it was okay" because there is a stamp or label on the products.
