Redefining intelligence
With another school year underway, it's timely to talk about learning, knowledge and intelligence. Here, we wonder about relationships being created among the Internet of Things, which develops its own intelligence, autonomous vehicles that we also hope to be intelligent, and smart highways. A whole future ahead of us. Also in this issue, my colleague, a historian by training, introduces us to a perhaps less well-known aspect of the origin of electric motors. There's even more in this issue. Good reading!

IOT Technology Will Connect Highways, Street Lights and Vehicles. Cars Have Gotten Smart. Can Roads Catch Up?
By Kathy Pretz
As more and more intelligent cars and autonomous vehicles hit the road, some engineers are thinking about what can be done to smarten up the streets on which they travel. Doing so could allow smart cars and trucks to exchange information with other vehicles, traffic-management centres, and private companies about traffic congestion, accidents, and weather conditions. The key to making it happen is an Internet of Things system that includes sensors embedded in the roadway and on traffic lights.

Looking Back at Electric Motor Use in Factories, Advancements in 1889
By Owen Hurst
The other day I came across an interesting article that takes us back to some early innovations regarding the use of electric motors in manufacturing facilities. The article titled "The Electric Motor in Factories", and was published in Science by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1889. Do You See Killer Spiders Around Every Corner?
By Keith Sones
In the early 1980s, the Canadian economy took a hard kick to the stomach. Interest rates were sky high, jobs were hard to come by and regular families were losing their homes. Fresh out of university, I decided to expand my horizons and spend what little money I had on a trip to Australia. Perhaps not the wisest use of my dwindled savings but "Hey, why not," I told myself. Kangaroos on every street, a land of nothing but beaches and palm trees and cute Koala bears that will eat from the palm of your hand. All of this seemed very enticing to a young man at the front end of life.
