Trends that are necessary and others less so
Some technological trends are announced long in advance and eventually take shape, or not. When they don't get to market, it's often because the technology has been succeeded by newer technology before having reached its full potential. At this moment we appear to be converging on important technological advances and reducing the costs of lighting controls, which would finally open the door to a trend announced for some time — lighting as a service. We've been saying this since the beginning: technology changes everything from applications to business models. Read on about this new market and consider the directions that controls could take.

Lighting Retrofit
Parking Garage Lighting Retrofit Reduces Energy Costs, Improves Safety and Aesthetics
Located in the heart of the Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal is a large residential development known as Le Sanctuaire. The condominium buildings surround a courtyard with two low-rise commercial structures. Upgrading lighting in the underground parking garage was necessary for many reasons. While the existing fluorescent lights were doing an adequate job of lighting up the laneways, they did not project sufficient light over the parking spaces, reducing visibility for people accessing their vehicles. Furthermore, the fixtures were deteriorating and maintenance costs were high. The retrofit involved installing…

Lighting Controls
Distributed Low Voltage Infrastructures and Their Impact on Controls
By Kevin Willmorth
While the majority of installations today are distributed high voltage (between 110V and 347V), the emergence of solid-state lighting technology has brought into question whether this is the most practical and efficient way to feed future lighting systems. The majority of conventional lighting products operate at power levels between 60W and 500W. Solid-state lighting products tend to operate at far lower levels of between 6W and 95W, operating at light source voltages of between 12V and 38V. At these lower demand levels, distributing high voltage to be converted to low voltage at every luminaire location is called into question.
