Human centric lighting a new component in industrial and commercial design
A new and core component of lighting design is human centric lighting. It means putting people at the center of lighting design. Human centric lighting considers both visual and non-visual effects of light from a physiological and psychological perspective and extends the scope of lighting beyond the traditional architectural design approach, which focuses on aesthetics, visibility and safety. Tunable white (TW) is the enabling technology for human centric lighting applications. More in this issue. Also related to human centric lighting, read about a converted industrial office offering large common areas and a café. Learn more on space optimization with networked lighting control. Good reading!

Steve Mesh on Space Optimization with Networked Lighting Control
By Steve Mesh
Saving energy is a huge benefit when you use a networked lighting control system. Fixtures can be turned off when not needed. Or they can be dimmed in response to available daylight or other input. Saving energy is a great reason to deploy a networked lighting control system, but it's not the only one. There are quite a few other "non-energy benefits" (or NEBs). "Space utilization" and "indoor positioning" are two such non-energy benefits. On the surface, these may sound esoteric. However, rest assured that they can provide additional value in a project, beyond simple energy savings...

LED Technology - White paper
How to Get Precision Tunable White Lighting
Human centric lighting puts people at the center of lighting design. It considers both the visual and non-visual effects of light from a physiological and psychological perspective and extends the scope of lighting beyond the traditional architectural design approach, which focuses on aesthetics, visibility and safety. Tunable white (TW) is the enabling technology for human centric lighting applications. Studies have shown that the benefits to people when they have access to nature's 24-hour daylight cycle include better focus, better sleep and increased general feelings of wellness. Today, however, most people spend up to 90% of their time indoors so it is often hard to reap the benefits of natural light. TW technology creates artificial light that mimics natural daylight and its daily warm to cool cycle by adjusting the color temperature of a luminaire's white light output. This adjustment to artificial light is important to those that spend many hours indoors...

Lighting Makes a Statement in Converted Industrial Office
When eSentire moved to its new corporate headquarters in Factory Square (Waterloo, Ontario), it took over two units of an existing industrial facility with tall ceilings and concrete floors. The fast-growing cybersecurity firm hired DFY Studio to transform the 65,000 sq.ft. expanse into an office building with large common areas and a café. DFY Studio worked with the concept of a cyber highway and its interconnectivity to create a dynamic space with visual connections. These visual connections were achieved by highlighting elements in the open ceilings, exposed conduit to the lighting, and graphic wayfinding throughout the space...
